Hello all! About my absence...Finals were a large part of my disappearance...I also started exploring other areas of my creativity, PAINTING :) But mostly, I got bored. I love blogging, but I lost sight of why I do this, It was great creative expression for me...and I needed time to remember that. Artist Spotlight: Duro Olowu

In my opinion, we don't see enough authentic culture in fashion. This designer brings just that. Nigerian born (and London raised) Olowu started out as a lawyer before stepping into fashion. Bright colors and bold prints reflect his love for his heritage, while modern silhouettes and details are influences from his current home (London). I can see the likes of Solange, Gwen Stefani, and Sienna Miller garbed in Olowu. Check out a few of my favorite looks from Spring / Fall 2011.

Good Eats: Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread

My sister and I joined forces and made some great food this weekend. My sis made her Best-of-the-West Chili, and I, after flipping through my newly thrifted cookbook (Barefoot Contessa at Home) settled on the Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread. Here is my addition to our collaboration lol.

Instead of making my cornbread from scratch as the Barefoot master did, I took a short cut and used two boxes of Jiffy (I was tired lol) Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2 boxes Jiffy
2 eggs
1/3 cup milk & half a cup of sour cream (my addition to the recipe)
2 cups Sharp cheddar cheese (reserve some to sprinkle on top)
2-3 fresh Jalapenos seeded and minced
3 green onion stalks

After mixing all the ingredients, I buttered a cast iron skillet poured in my batter, and let cook for 20-25 minutes.

Typically I'm not a cornbread person, but this came out DELICIOUS! It was moist, and flavorful, a nice compliment to my sisters amazing chili. Till next time ladies (and guys) ;)

Twilight Zone: Project Runway Season 9

This was the last season of Project Runway I'll ever watch. Too often the rightful winner(s) have been robbed! Kim or Victor should have been the last two standing, BUT the two contestants with the less stylish collections were head to head. Im thinking "OK, the judges are gonna choose Josh, he showed more thought in design, texture, and NECKLINES" (anyone who saw the fashion show KNOWS what I'm talkin bout.) But NO! The judges then proceed to name the contestant with the LEAST skill, diversity in fabric, design, and versatility, the winner!? I have nothing more to say.

Vintage Flicks: The Business of Being Born

Normally, this segment is reserved for vintage movies...but after seeing this film in class, I knew I wanted to review it. The film: The Business of Being Born.

"In America today, giving birth is a billion dollar business. But who's really benefiting?"

SYNOPSIS: This documentary (released in 2008) produced by Rikki Lake, sheds light on the birth experience in modern (western) medicine in comparison to midwifery. Ultimately this doc. tells us how birth became...well, a business.

VERDICT: I recommend any persons with children, who want children, who watch children, who like children, lol, everyone, see this documentary. I know after taking it in, you will be moved to explore your options in this regard. NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH, there are several births shown. Available in most movie stores (a dying breed, I know) and instant stream on NetFlix. Let me know what you all think.

I love this chics. I love that I can watch their show minus all the profanity bleeps you hear while most watching reality TV. I also love that they wear clothes...unlike other reality sister trios who's uniform is the freakum dress. (Alright, alright, no salt towards the Kardashians, but can we do something different ladies, please?) Its nice to see a little reality in reality tv, lol.

Life has kept me busy, not leaving me much time to partake in things that make me happy...like reading a book, or painting a picture (one of my passions), or making jewelry to name a few. I've decided to do something about it. Here are a few things that made me happy.

A brand new easel I found at a thrift store $25! I had been waiting to get a good deal on one.

Although tiresome, I had a really nice weekend. I got to hang with grandma for a bit, then on Saturday, with my sis and a good friend. We started at a local flea market, then ended up in the city...we had a blast. Below are a few of the things I picked up on our impromptu excursion, the rest are a few pics of my tiny workspace...Happy Monday!

I've wanted this awesome huge coffee table book forever, and finally found it at the flea market for $7!

After our friend found these leather bracelets in the H&M's men's dept for $1, I quickly grabbed six of em...watch me stack, lol.

A quick jaunt into Anthropologie led to the purchase of these adorable notebooks.

I've had this forever and love it...a gorgeous book mark.

My tiny desk...I love that it hides a mess when its closed.

Paint, jewelry making supplies, stationary stuff, and usually, my laptop.

I finally tried pipe cleaner curls...I like em alot. The curls last a really long time, and I was able to do something different with them at every stage of them falling, lol.

I should not have folded the pipe cleaners in half, not for long locs.

It was nice not having hair in my face (later on that is)

Had I have left the pipe cleaner long, My curls would have been tighter (not falling.)

Forgive my not posting earlier, the sun has been zapping my energy. I'm not complaining though, cause I'm gonna be TO'd when it starts getting cold, lol. Anyway, I seriously deserve a round of applause, (hahaha) cause wearing a dress every day for a week was noooo easy task...I think the fact the pants weren't an option made it hard. I know I ought to be a shame. My closet is usually my happy place, but as of late I dread goin in there...considering I have such a small closet, I must find a few ways to maximize its space. I would love suggestions. ( And yes, I have more clothing and shoes, lol.)

I am typically a very tidy person...but my closet is alive. It wont cooperate.

Skirt hangers are great to have...so are vintage furs ;)

I ought to be ashamed...

Seeing that its back to school season for everyone (including me) thought I'd post a list of must haves for the school year.

Vintage leather backpack. I would wear this outside of shcool, lol.

High waist skinnys to tuck into boots

I know, not cute but I refuse to walk around all day in pain and cold, lol.

OMG, I found a pair of these reversible tights brand new in package at a thrift store, on side is black, the other brown. Genius.

I try to keep it simple during school hours, hoops are always stylish & easy.

Those darn apple ear-buds are sooo uncomfy. These are comfy and cute.

Love this stuff.

Cause you can never be too careful, lol. (pepper spray)

Breakdown

Please forgive my lack of posting, I started school this week, and my computers misbehaving. Here's the breakdown of my outfit from this post, and a tiny DIY, lol.

This is the after...the before is below.

UGH. This was way to long, loose, and matronly. BUT...I loved the print.

This vintage bag was in good shape except...

A few missing stones. So...

I dropped by Joanne's and picked up a few things...

Problem solved.

I found this vintage cocktail ring with missing stones, I knew something could be done.

With the same tools I used for my bag (with different stones) I fixed it.

It was awesome I was able to find stones the exact color as the originals...I can't say enough about E6000, this stuff is amazing.

Skirting the Issue

I'm bitten by the wedding bug. Many of my contemporaries are engaged or on their way, lol. Seeing that I prefer weddings / wedding garb of the unconventional sort, I 'd thought I'd post on wedding skirts. A cool alternative to the (sometimes) stuffy dress. Check out a few of my faves...

For a low key (but glam) bride. Not feelin the tee, maybe replace with a french cuff button down.

For a lady who wants the drama of tulle without all the hassle, lol.

A wedding in the REAL wine country.

Last weekend I attended a very beautiful wedding. The ceremony was held at an awesome winery not to far from home. It was the perfect backdrop for the lovely bride, and her gorgeous bridesmaids. The bride & groom achieved a seamless blend of beauty and (much) fun. Since I lost my camera, I cant show you my dress before & after, but when I do, I'll make sure and post more pics..

I usually wear red lips and nails together, instead of painting my whole hand(s) red, I painted a finger.

Mary determines not to confide in anyone that she is aware of her husbands infidelity only to have her confrontation with the other woman put in the papers....the rest takes you through what happens to Mary's marriage and friendships when all hits the fan.

Verdict: Boasting an all woman cast (not a male in sight) This movie is awesome! Far from the modern remake (PLEASE don't waste your time) this version carries an engaging, and progressive story line. Added perk, the costumes are amazing from beginning to end, and although the movie is back and white, there is a full-color fashion show...nothing short of amazing.

Sooo, I'm sure many of you know I've been on a crazy home improvement kick, and as promised I'm sharing some of my projects. I picked this adorable antique dresser up at a thrift store, with the intent of using it as a credenza (I didn't have much furniture in my living room) Check out the re-do below...

Dated in cream w/ gold piping, and missing a handle, I knew I had my hands full.

Sanded, primed and ready to be painted.

Seeing yellow is one of my favorite colors, and it looked so happy in the can I couldn't resist.

A few extras to hang over head.

Coming together...

I spray painted the old handles to modernize them a little..

And found some other vintage handles to replace the missing ones....

Done and done.

Quick DIY: Revamping Vintage purse Pt. 2

I love making something old new ( Check out the first bag I did here ) but still, theres nothing worse (to me) thank finding the bag of my dreams (thrifting of course) then seeing that the handles are split, broken, or blackened (more on how to fix that later.) Even though the straps on this vintage Givenchy bag were water logged (damp, mushy and gross) I was not about to pass this up this adorable bag.

BTW: I lost all the pics with the purses original straps....sorry ;(

Where the old purse straps were attached, I just cut them off.

Style Envy: Elizabeth Taylor

Mrs. Taylor was a beautiful woman with great style...I don't mean she always had on some amazing ensemble, it was just what she exuded....she wore everything well, she made the clothes apart of herself. Enough of my rambling, check out a few of my fave stills from a few of her movies.

Even though It was highly unlikely that a European country existed in an African continent, I still love this version of Cleopatra..I need that arm bracelet. And I'm lovin the liner.

Love the dress, love the necklace, love the bird on her head, lol.

Love everything here (Butterfield 8)...especially the contrast of her necklace and sweater.

Amazing suit....they don't make em like this no more.

Although in a slip most of this movie (Cat on a hot tin roof) she wore it like a cocktail dress!

Mama's got a brand new bag!

I found this awesome Salvatore Ferragamo bag at a garage sale this past weekend...it looks tiny, but holds a TON while keeping its shape...came with a shoulder strap too...but I prefer the top handle sort.

Leather and studs, I'm SOLD, lol.

If you look close, you can see the studs have shoes on them, sooo cute.

Even the inside was in great condition.

I've always loved a gorgeous chaise lounge (not the modern ones, the antique / vintage variety). I wish my apartment was big enough for one...maybe I can replace my couch with this, lol.....

This would make being a couch potato look fab (a stretch?)

Home Dek'd: The chair(s)

I've been super busy...overhauling my life, lol. Here is one the smaller projects I just finished..(also finished that lovely dresser found in this post, will post by the end of the week :D)

I decided against painting this, and just changed the upholstery..

Here is the finished product.

I somehow lost the before pic of the following chair..but so you know, it was an ugly brown, with gross old pleather upholstery. But the shape was so cute and retro, for 1.99 I could see potential.

After all that hard work I got hungry...and made pan roasted brussel sprouts. Yum.

All from one of my fave stores...Daiso. Teddy bear tape measure, card case, cute tiny tote, knitting needles (I know, I'm everywhere,) chicken kitchen timer, & chocorooms...yum.

They were gone in minutes.

I wasn't looking for this..it jumped right in front of me...marked 19.99, got it for $10 (I love sale days)

Vintage Flicks: Imitation of Life (1959)

Seeing that I'm crazy about old movies, I've decided to do periodical reviews on some of my faves (and least faves.)

SYNOPSIS: Annie Johnson, a homeless housekeeper, and Laura Meredith, a struggling actress, are two single mothers who cross paths and take up living together in support of one another. Annie's extremely fair skin daughter, resents her race so much, she insists on passing for white and eventually disowning her mother. The movie takes on you the highs of one mother & daughter, as the mom lives her dreams and.. and the lows of the other mother and daughter as they struggle to find a medium in terms of self acceptance.

VERDICT: Warning: If your going to watch this movie, make sure and do it in the morning / afternoon...I usually feel the need to go outside and get some light afterward, this movie is heavy. With that said, it was a great. It has a great story line, progresses well, and all though I'm no crier (I rarely cry during movies) this can bring me close to welling up. lol. Bottom line, its worth watching...it helps the wardrobe is on point!

Guess how much I got this adorable ole school set on craigslist for...tired of guessing, lol? $20.00!!! Yep, each item was ten dollars. HAPPY. I'm thinking of painting it an antique blue...and intensifying the piping & hardware with gold paint... I cant wait to get started!

I made a petticoat that I keep wearing under most of my dresses and gathered skirts.

I'll mention the first ones that come to mind: Emilio de la Morena, Dion Lee, Riccardo Tisci, Christopher Kane, the Proenza Schouler boys, Miuccia Prada (by this point my adrenaline has elevated to unhealthy proportions and that’s my cue to stop)…

Earrings from grandma and a vintage necklace I got for reeeally cheap in a second-hand furniture shop.

High-waisted skirts and 5 inch heels.

Not sure about this one. I’m gonna have to say Tokyo, because everything is “wearable” in Tokyo.

Broken belts, glittery jeans, Bell-sleeve tops and at one point LOTS of spikes and studs.

I kick butt in soccer but people never believe me.

Favorite fashion magazine?

I love whatever fashion magazine I can put my hands on! I'm on a lucky strike when I find Latin-American Vogue for goodness sake.

Favorite vacation spot?

Roatan, an island an hour away (boat ride) from the coasts of La Ceiba. The beaches are so yummy, makes me wanna wear turbans and red lipstick and Marni +Missoni and strange 50s sunglasses. I can’t afford the trips or the Marni, though. Hehe.

Favorite neighborhood restaurant?

“Las Carnitas”…exact translation would be “The Tiny Meats”. It’s not really a restaurant, though. You have to stand in line to order and there’s wooden tables and chairs on the sidewalk and they fry everything right before your face.

Where can we find more of you?

Mini Beauty / Thrift Haul

SO, after working hard yesterday, I decided to stop in my local beauty supply and pick up a few things...and here are some items I got thrifting a few days ago..I'll be doing more shopping in the next few days, and will update with those items soon. Hope you like ;)

The finished product, lol. Backwards, I know. Although a little bright in the compact, the blush wears very pretty!

NYX Blush in Cinnamon, NYX Doll Eye Mascara (volume) & MaxFactor eyeliner in Night Club.

The mascara is GREAT!!! Added length and volume to lashes.

Thrifted super cool creature necklaces...at $2 each, how could I resist a turtle, owl, and shield? lol.

Sooo, looks a little beat up, but I found this BALLY bag for $10!

BBD In the City

This past weekend, two of my sisters, and a few good friends went to see late 80's / early 90's group (and three parts of New Edition) BBD (Bell Biv Devoe) at Yoshi's jazz club in SF. We had a blast..I don't think anyone there sat longer that two minutes the entire time. Anyways, check out some pics from our night in the city ;)
